Originally from Birmingham, AL, Banditos is a group - more like a gang, actually - of six 20-somethings, nowadays operating out of Nashville, close to, and simultaneously very far away from, the gleaming towers and industry hustle of Lower Broad and Music Row. With the rugged power of a flashy Super Chief locomotive, the Banditos’ self-titled debut album bodaciously appropriates elements of ‘60s blues-fused acid rock, ZZ Top’s jangly boogie, garage punk scuzz a la Burger Records, the Drive-By Truckers’ yawp, the populist choogle of CCR, Slim Harpo’s hip shake baby groove, gut bucket Fat Possum hill country mojo and the Georgia Motherf**king Satellites. From backwoods bluegrass, to slinky nods to Muscle Shoals soul and unexpected bits of doo-wop sweetness, the Banditos recall many, but sound like no one but themselves.
The Old Grey Whistle Test
The Old Grey Whistle Test is the pseudonym for the solo musical musings of San Francisco-based vocalist, songwriter, and frontwoman Tracey Holland. A beaker-full of Nancy Sinatra-noir, Linda Perhacs' psychedelia, Stevie Nicks-mysticism, and Kate Bush-soundscapes, set to a score of Ennio Morricone. The resulting collection of songs on OGWT's debut, Ouroboros, is a small treasure trove of richness. Both personal and cryptic, Ouroboros revels in an unshakable draw to the subtler, darker aspects of life which are explored intently throughout the album. The complexities of identity, intimacy, gender, sexuality, and even unseen metaphysical forces are all dragged out and sifted through. There’s an unmistakable potency and vulnerability to The Old Grey Whistle Test's sound that hovers between sounds & worlds: haunting, strange, and beautiful.
Angelica Rockne
Angelica Rockne plays rock & roll that “belongs on an AM car radio on a two lane highway.” Her warm, evocative voice is constantly teetering on the border of beauty and grit; of classic country and desert rock. Elements of her music are reminiscent of sounds that were echoing out of Laurel Canyon in the late 60’s and early 70’s. You could think of her as Stevie Nicks backed by Crazy Horse or Mazzy Star gone country. Whatever the comparison, there is an undeniable authenticity and rawness that can be heard in songs like “When I See You” and “Joshua” from her most recent self-released 7”. With her debut full-length album underway to be released in the winter of 2016, Angelica can be found making frequent runs up and down the west coast from her hometown of Nevada City, California.
