Soul Song Paralytic (as part of Re:Imagine End of Life 2018)
Inspired by the loss of close friends, SOUL SONG PARALYTIC is a musical-visual collaboration exploring grief that brings together the musical project Saint Solitude and the visual artist Dara Lorenzo. Drawing from and sublimating our personal losses into a musical album and visual exhibit, we hope to create a shared public space where grief and all its facets can be on display with pride. We intend for these pieces to stand in stark contrast to a culture that shuns discussions about death, often fails to provide adequate tools for healing, and rewards individuals who rush through mourning or neglect it altogether.

The first component is the 5th album by Saint Solitude, which specializes in “bittersweet fuzz.” The 12-song album confronts the minutiae of grieving and extrapolates my personal experience to a broader paradigm: the single dream I’ve had of my friend since his death turns into a question of how the dead define the living; the singularly painful process of delivering a eulogy focuses instead on an impressive inventory of fond memories.

The second component will be a collection by Dara Lorenzo, who is creating layered prints and plates using multiple methods to convey the abstract confusions and complexities so central to grieving. Her lyrical photography and use of text, informed by field “interviews,” allows audiences to draw their own conclusions, paralleling the subjective experience of loss in an exploratory fashion.

Having opened at Oakland's East Bay Community Space in October 2017 (with a follow-up iteration at Firehouse Collective's Lottie Rose House in December), the project will open its third phase at Neck of the Woods on April 18th as part of Re:Imagine End of Life 2018. In addition, we will be debuting our new collaborative music video for the song "Your Radio Silence" at the show.

Ultimately, we hope to provide an accessible resource for local mourning communities and explicitly encourage similar creative expressions for painful experiences – all contributing to a healthier and more alive Bay Area.

PLUS we will have special guest Angelica Ekeke present a rare performance of her "visual symphony" entitled The Removal.
